About Clarkia

A native California wildflower, Clarkia is sometimes known as Mountain Garland. Its beautiful and delicate blooms explode with color is spring and summer. These blooms can be found in shades of pink, white, red, and purple and typically grow to about 22″ tall.

When to Plant Clarkia Seeds

Direct sow Clarkia seeds in the early Spring. In warmer climates, zones 8-10, you can sow Clarkia seeds in the Fall.

Where to Plant Clarkia Seeds

Clarkia prefers Full Sun, but will tolerate partial shade, as well. Soil should be well-draining, but not too rich, as Clarkia prefers more average soil.

Clarkia seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Learn more about germination light requirements here.

Sow your seeds densely, and compress them into the soil. Remember to keep them uncovered, as they require sunlight to germinate. After germination, thin back your sprouts to 4-6 inches apart.

How to Care for Clarkia

Water regularly, until established, but ensure that the soil does not remain too wet. Once established, Clarkia is rather drought tolerant and should not need any fertilizers. Clarkia has weak stems so tall plants may require staking.
