About Red Hot Pokers

Red hot pokers (Kniphofia) are herbaceous perennials celebrated for their striking, tall flower spikes that burst into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow during spring and summer. Tall and stately, Red Hot Poker Roots Alcazar features slender bronze stems supporting tubular spikes of color reminiscent of a desert sunset. Both exotic and easy-care, group several together in the garden for maximum impact, where visitors can admire the shape and color that is unmatched by other perennials.

When to Plant Red Hot Poker Roots

Red hot poker plants thrive in USDA Zones 5 through 9, though they will need heavy mulch in colder areas like Zone 5. The best time to plant is in spring or early fall when temperatures are mild.

Where to Plant Red Hot Poker Roots

The more sun these plants receive, the better they’ll bloom. Choose a location in a sunny, airy spot in well-draining soil where they can thrive. Keep plants well-spaced for better airflow which helps prevent fungal issues, or in humid climates, leaf spot or rust.

Red hot poker plants are resilient and thrive in well-draining soil. However, poor drainage is one of the few conditions that can harm them. Damp soil, especially in winter, increases the risk of root rot and should be avoided.

Because the look of red hot poker plants is so unique, we suggest choosing a location where this specimen can stand out. Rather than dotting the garden, try grouping together. Another idea is to pair them with ornamental grasses or together with echinacea, lavender, sedum or salvia whose solid purple color can complement nicely.

Keep in mind that this plant grows three to four feet tall and two to three feet wide at maturity.

How to Plant Red Hot Poker Roots

Soak the roots in water for up to 30 minutes before planting. Loosen the soil to about 12 to 15 inches deep. If you’re working with heavy clay, mixing in compost or sand to improve drainage is mandatory for Kniphofia. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart to give them room to breathe.

When planting bare roots, plant with shoots facing upwards and cover the crown with soil just enough to protect it. Give your plants a good soak to settle the soil and kick-start root growth.

How to Care for Red Hot Pokers

Red hot poker has moderate water needs throughout the growing season. They’re drought-tolerant once established, but they do appreciate regular watering, especially during their first growing season, less frequently in subsequent years. Avoid soggy soil at all costs, this will cause root rot and the demise of your plant.

As blooms fade, deadhead to encourage continued flowering. In the fall, trim back any scraggly foliage. Cut the entire plant back to just four inches above the soil line before the next growing season in the spring to give the plant a fresh start.

In colder climates, a thick layer of mulch or straw around the base will protect the crown from freezing.

Divide clumps every 3 to 5 years in spring or fall. Lift the plants from the ground and tease the clumps apart with your fingers starting around the perimeter. Dividing will keep your plants healthy and prevent overcrowding. You will then be able to expand your growing area, or give away free plants to your friends.

Each spring, use a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
