When to Plant Aubrieta Seeds

Plant after the last frost of the season for outdoor planting, or start 6-8 weeks indoors before the final frost before transferring outdoors.

Where to Plant Aubrieta Seeds

Plant in well draining loamy or sandy soils exposed to full sun (6-8 hours of sun a day). Aubrieta do best in soil that is rich in lime, which makes the soil slightly less acidic. A pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 is optimal.

How to Plant Aubrieta Seeds

Aubrieta seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Learn more about germination light requirements here.

Till soil and clear any growth or debris. Sow seeds on the surface of the soil no deeper than 1/8th of an inch and lightly cover. Water lightly, keeping soil moist but not saturated. Subsequent plantings of Aubrieta can be taken from cuttings from an already established plant as well as seeds.

How to Care for Aubrieta

Aubrieta is very easy to care for. When Aubrieta begins to sprout, remove any weeds that persist, then thin out plants until they are about 10 inches apart. Cutting back the plants after the blooms have spent will prevent seeding, and keep the growth compact. Due to its nature of preferring sandier or rockier soils, Aubrieta is extremely drought tolerant and has no problem living on slopes.
