How to Care for Cosmos

Water deeply once a week, and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can cause damage to your Cosmos roots. They also benefit from deadheading as soon as your flowers die.

Cosmos roots can be grown as a tender perennial in Zones 7 and warmer. They are hardy in Zones 9 through 11, while roots remaining in the ground in Zones 7 and 8 will need heavy mulching over the winter. In colder climates, lift the roots in the fall and store them in a cool, dry place for winter. Cosmos grown in containers in Zones 8 and below should be brought indoors during the winter.
