When to Plant Godetia Seeds

Direct sow in Spring, after the threat of frost has passed. Godetia is not a great candidate for transplant, so starting these seeds indoors isn’t recommended.

Where to Plant Godetia Seeds

Godetia does best in Full Sun, but can tolerate Partial Shade. Godetia is sensitive to warm temperatures, so in warmer climates, select Partial Shade. Choose well-draining soil, as Godetia roots tend to rot in wet soil.

How to Plant Godetia Seeds

Godetia seeds require light to germinate, so be careful not to cover them when planting. Learn more about germination light requirements here.

Directly sow your seeds onto the surface of the soil, and compress. Do not cover with soil, straw, mulch or other mediums, as Godetia requires sunlight to germinate. Covered seeds will have a much weaker germination rate.

How to Care for Godetia

Little care is required for Godetia once it’s established. Godetia can be a prolific grower and seeder, so some thinning may need to be done from time to time. Ideal plant spacing is 16-20 inches. To prevent reseeding, deadhead your godetia as soon as the flowers have died back, so that seed pods don’t have the chance to develop. Taller varieties may require staking.
