Sowing Seeds in Milk Jugs

Starting a garden doesn’t have to be expensive. Check out this easy project from our friends at Spoken Garden and learn how to sow flower seeds in recycled milk jugs. This method is great for those gardening in colder climates. It also works well for seeds that require cold stratification.

Create a mini greenhouse in just a few easy steps!

🌱 Wash your milk jug thoroughly.

🌱 Cut open the jug at the base of the handle. Leave a small section attached to make it easier to seal after planting. Poke several small drainage holes in the bottom of your milk jug.

🌱 Fill the bottom of the milk jug with potting mix. Dampen your soil before adding it to your container.

🌱 Plant your seeds, paying attention to the recommended seed depth. You can find this information on our seed packets.

🌱 Seal your container with duct tape and discard the cap. This will prevent excess moisture and allow heat to escape.

🌱 Place milk jugs in a sunny location. Check regularly to make sure your soil doesn’t dry out. Transplant your seedlings when the soil in your area is ready. Have you ever tried this seed-starting method? Let us know in the comments!
